Every computation spends time and memory, and for fifty years they looked roughly bound together: a long job seemed to need a large scratchpad. In 2025 a proof showed you can always redo any computation using only about the square root of the memory it appeared to need. The price is paid in time, by recomputing whatever you choose not to store.
The deep sea has a line no fish can cross
To survive the pressure, deep-sea fish fill their cells with a single protective molecule, and they need more of it the deeper they go. Around 8,200 meters that fix turns on them: their bodies grow nearly as salty as the sea, and the chemistry of staying alive breaks down. The ocean's deepest quarter holds no fish at all.
