We live inside a bubble blown by exploding stars

About fifteen supernovae hollowed out the space around us. The same blast is why there are newborn stars in our sky.

Here is our address, the real one.

The Sun sits near the middle of a cavity in space about a thousand light-years across, where the gas is thinner than the best vacuum any lab on Earth can make. It is called the Local Bubble, and it did not form gently. Somewhere between fourteen and twenty stars in a nearby nursery exploded over the last ten to twenty million years, and their blast waves swept the neighborhood almost empty. We drifted into this hollow about five million years ago, and we are still inside it.

That alone reframes things. We do not live in open space. We live in the blown-out interior of a string of dead stars.

But the part that stopped me is what the bubble does at its edge. As the shell of swept-up gas expands, it works like a plow, piling material in front of it. Pile enough cold gas into one place and it collapses into new stars. In 2022, astronomers mapped this and found something almost too tidy: nearly every young star and star-forming region near us sits on the surface of this bubble. The Pleiades, the nurseries in Taurus, the bright new stars in the sky, all of them strung along the shell like dew on a spiderweb.

So the same explosions are doing two things at once. Their ash is the radioactive dust still settling on Antarctica. And their shockwave is the reason there are any newborn stars near us at all.

Death and the cradle turn out to be the same event. The stars that died did not just leave debris. They plowed the gas into the exact conditions that light the next generation, and we happen to be living in the quiet hollow in the middle while it happens on the walls around us.

I find that hard to hold in my head and hard to stop looking at. The sky is not a still backdrop. It is the inside of an explosion that is still busy making things.
