A dead star is dusting Antarctica, and the dose is rising

There is iron in the Antarctic ice that could not have formed on Earth. It is still sifting down from the sky.

Somewhere in Antarctica there is iron that should not exist.

It is an isotope called iron-60. Earth cannot make it. It forms only in the cores of dying stars and the shockwaves of supernovae, and it falls apart with a half-life of 2.6 million years, so whatever the planet was born with decayed to nothing long ago. Find a single atom of it in fresh ice and there is only one explanation: it arrived, recently, from outside.

A team in Germany melted about 300 kilograms of Antarctic ice, boiled it down to a few hundred milligrams of dust, and counted the atoms one at a time on the only machine sensitive enough to do it. One of the researchers described the search as hunting for a needle in 50,000 stadiums packed to the roof with hay. The machine finds the needle in an hour.

They found the iron. And here is the part I keep turning over: it is still landing, and there is more of it now than there was 40,000 years ago.

This is not a fossil of one ancient night. We are inside the debris right now. The Solar System has drifted into a denser pocket of a vast cloud of gas and dust between the stars, and that cloud is the ash of supernovae that detonated millions of years ago, close enough to seed the sky around us. Roughly fifteen stars in one stellar nursery blew up over the last ten to twenty million years and carved the near-empty cavity we live inside, a thousand light-years across. The dust on the ice is a postcard from those deaths, still being delivered.

“We are made of star stuff” is a fridge magnet now, worn smooth from use. The ice makes it specific again, and a little uncanny. Not a poem about the distant past, but this many milligrams, this isotope, this year. A dead star is exhaling, very slowly, and the planet is breathing it in while we argue about other things.


That is what got me. Not that we came from stars, which everyone half-knows, but that it is in the present tense. Right now, on the coldest and quietest surface on Earth, a fine snow of someone else’s catastrophe is settling, atom by atom. We only noticed because somebody built a machine patient enough to count it.
